The AKAnomics AKAdemy, our signature activity, addresses the area of economic empowerment. Beginning in January 2007, we will hold a series of financial seminars promoting economic awareness, economic sufficiency, and an economic engagement for betterment.
MLK Day is recognized each year in an effort to make Dr. King's birthday "a day on and not a day off." The chapter has acknowledged MLK Day through activities such as a Dr. King Informational Seminar held at Catonsville Commons, a Dr. King Recognition Weekend, and a Dr. King Creative Writing Contest held at Grace A.M.E. Church.
Catonsville Commons, a branch of Genesis ElderCare, is the site of our educational seminars addressing needs of the elderly. At least 3 times a year, we visit the nursing home and take the residents on virtual trips to travel destinations such as Hawaii, Jamaica, and California. We hold additional activities such as BINGO & an Annual Holiday Celebration.
The Health Education Resources Organization (HERO) Annual AIDSWALK is an event the chapter has participated in for more than 5 years. Each year, the chapter donates over $500 in pledges and participates in the walk. For the 2006 walk, the chapter organized a team of 12 walkers and turned in a combined donation of more than $2,900.00.
The Annual Science Bee has been held for the past 5 years at Southwest Academy located in Catonsville. Each year, the science classes have mini-Science Bees to select approximately 25 students who advance to the main Science Bee. The chapter awards savings bonds and trophies to the winners and certificates to all participants.
National Family Volunteer Day, held on the 3rd Saturday of November, addresses the target of the black family. The chapter has acknowledged this day through activities such as food drives, volunteer work with the Maryland Food Bank, and collection of school supplies for families in need.
The Christmas Basket Give-Away is a collaborative event with Grace A.M.E. Church in which the chapter has contributed canned goods collected during our Thanksgiving Food Drive, as well as Barbie dolls, and school supplies. Grace A.M.E. distributes the Christmas baskets to families in need within the Catonsville community.
The Black Barbie Doll Project is a collaborative event with Grace A.M.E. Church in which the chapter donates approximately 40 black Barbie dolls to the church each year at Christmas. The dolls are placed in Christmas baskets of families in need with young girls.
The Hillendale PAL Center, located on Halstead Avenue in the Hillendale/Towson area of Baltimore County is the site of chapter projects such as homework study hour, chaperoned teenage girls' sleepovers, and hosted holiday parties for the girls and boys.
